I was so psyched about the ACT when I posted on the 14th that I completely forgot to mention a much less fun thing that happened the day before. As of Nov. 13, I am now unemployed.
I had been working on a web site project for my school district (and was getting minimum wage while getting to set my own hours), and the site was progressing nicely. Unfortunately, my boss (who was my former math teacher before he retired from teaching), who was in charge of all the content on the site (I did the coding and styling), lost interest in the project and decided to let another teacher take over. Which means, of course, that I am out of a job. I’m not pissed at my boss; he was a volunteer, so he certainly wasn’t under any obligation to continue the project at all, but I am seriously bummed about my new lack of income.
I am, however, seriously pissed at some other people who my boss had to interact with regarding the project. Shortly after the site went live, various “anonymous” staff members started complaining about the site. Their complaints included two major things that pissed me off.
First off, apparently, the site did not display properly under Internet Explorer under certain non-default security settings. Which, unfortunately, happened to be non-default security settings which my school district’s computers were configured with. This caused a security warning to be thrown when the site was visited. While I totally agree with the obvious assertion that this was not a good thing, apparently some higher-up in the district called up my boss and suggested that I was not trustworthy with the computers. While my boss didn’t listen to this complaint, it was seriously irritating that they would accuse someone on their payroll of trying to sabotage their computer network. This glitch was fixed by me withing 12 hours of my being notified of it by my boss.
Second, the project was powered by WordPress (no blog was present, but the Static Pages feature of WordPress was very suited to my uses, with a few plugins). And, since I’m not the kind of loser who uses software and gives no credit, the site contained a short, small-font note in the legal info: “Powered by WordPress”. Perfectly reasonable, right? Or not. First, let me say that the IT people in my district don’t know jack shit about computers or the Internet. I was able to get Administrator access to several school laptops last year in about 3 minutes, because they were too stupid to put a password on the Administrator account (I caused no damage). So, I guess it’s not much of a surprise that they don’t know jack shit about what WordPress is. Apparently, they think WordPress is a message board software solely used for letting site guests post unmoderated content on the site, and cause liability issues in the event that someone posts something offensive. So these IT idiots went and complained to my boss about that. Never mind that if they had looked at the freaking site for 3 minutes, they would have seen that there is no way to post any kind of content onto the site; my boss and I were the only people who could change any content on the site. It took lots of effort on my part and my boss’s to convince these dumbasses that there was no problem.
So yeah, I am now unemployed. I hate it when life doesn’t go my way.
